Social Language Programs
Girl Talk: A social group for girls ages 10-12.
Girls participating in Girl Talk discuss and learn about age appropriate expected behaviors, hobbies and social activities, non-verbal communication, self-esteem and body image.
Led by an SLP, this safe and fun environment allows the girls to talk about such topics as safety(computer predators, blogs, social networking, email), hygiene and appearance, boys, physical and hormonal; changes, gaining/losing friends, bullies, gossip, how to fit in during a party and much more.
This social group provides a casual environment where girls participate in various activities such as art and cooking, planning and having parties, going into the community, etc. as a means to focus on the development of the skills necessary for the social navigation and problem solving in Upper Elementary and Middle School.
This group meets twice a month for 1.5 hours a session and is on-going throughout the school year.
Guys' Hang Out Group: A dynamic student led group for Tweens and Teens
This group is designed to provide students with a supervised opportunity to practice their budding social skills with peers in a relaxed environment while focusing on the development of social language skills and problem solving necessary for being in Middle and High School. Using student generated ideas such as "Science Night", "Nerf Tag", "Game Night", etc, students learn how to be part of a group, plan an outing or party, the social rules and good ideas for communicating with friends (texting, emails, phone calls, etc), safety tips, as well as learn the “hidden rules” associated with hanging out with friends.
This group meets twice a month: once for 1.5 in small groups and then once as a big group for 2.5 hours. It is on going throughout the school year.
